Kim’s record-breaking winning score was the icing on the cake for this second powerful and emotional ladies skating event in the 2010 Winter Olympics. After the powerful performances from Tuesday’s short program, and the overwhelming emotions of watching Canada’s Joannie Rochette skate just days after the death of her mother, tonight’s freestyle skate featured more powerful performances from the top six competitors, and more emotions as Kim took home Korea’s first Gold medal in ladies’ figure skating, Japan’s Mao Asada won Silver, and Joannie won Bronze. As she finished her performance tonight, Joannie looked upward and blew a kiss.
Adding to the emotions of the evening was the spectacular performances of Team USA’s Mirai Nagasu and Rachel Flatt. Mirai was ecstatic when her final score of 19015 put her in fourth place, and earned her her highest score yet. She congratulated the three medal winners at the completion of the event. Rachel skated a beautiful performance that earned her a score of 182.49, and put her in seventh place. This is the first Olympics for both girls, who are 16 and 17 years of age, respectively, and they both did beautiful jobs.
There were many tears of joy and relief when the final skaters finished their performances, and the medals were handed out. This is a night that none of the girls will ever forget.
