Palin Celebrates 19th Amendment

Sarah Palin didn’t have the best batting average with her endorsements on Tuesday. But that didn’t stop her from announcing her support for a new crop of candidates on Wednesday.

In a post on her Facebook page, the former Alaska governor endorsed seven women who are seeking office this year — all the while citing the 90th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

“Words cannot express the depth of gratitude we owe to those brave feminist foremothers who struggled and sacrificed, endured imprisonment and ridicule, and fought fearlessly to grant future generations of American women a voice,” Ms. Palin wrote.

Obama in Seattle: The burden of expectations

During the 2008 campaign, the enthusiasm for one candidate or the other tended to bury an unpleasant truth: Whoever got elected would face huge problems that would be difficult to handle to the public’s satisfaction. As President Obama visits Seattle today (Aug. 17), that reality has caught up with him and his party.

Obama has relatively low popularity ratings, and the Democratic candidates for whom he is campaigning, including Sen. Patty Murray, face difficult election contests. Now, he will try to use his superior oratory and intellectual skills to rally voters to keep at least working Democratic majorities in Congress, anything but a sure thing.

Obama and the mosque near ground zero

The White House on Saturday struggled to tamp down the controversy over President Barack Obama’s statements about a mosque near ground zero — insisting Obama wasn’t backing off remarks Friday night when he offered support for a project that has infuriated some families whose loved ones died in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Obama’s comments placed him in the middle of the controversy over a Muslim group’s plans for a mosque near the site of the 2001 attack — and in turn, transformed an emotion-laden local dispute in New York into a nationwide debate overnight.

When Media Matters posted the audio and story behind Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s use of the “N” word, the Internet went into overdrive with comments, tweets and retweets, driving the story faster than the time it took for Dr. Laura to parody her way into the history books with a barrage of “N” word sarcasm on her radio show Aug. 10.
